What it is
A variable-pitch screw flight changes the distance between consecutive turns along its working length. The change may be stepped or progressive. This geometry is used when material needs to be introduced, spread, compressed or released differently from one section of the screw to another.
Pitch schedule controls the product
The product cannot be defined by one pitch dimension. The drawing should show the starting pitch, every intermediate value, the final pitch, the number of turns in each zone and the axial location of each change. Outside diameter, inside diameter or shaft fit, thickness and hand must be tied to the same datum.
Manufacturing and assembly route
The available manufacturing route depends on the section and pitch schedule. A continuous route may suit some profiles, while sectional forming and controlled assembly may be more practical for larger or more complex changes. Final joints, shaft attachment and overall straightness are reviewed as part of the assembly drawing.
Where it is considered
Variable pitch is commonly reviewed for feeding and bulk-material duties, including grain handling, port logistics, mining and general conveying equipment. Suitability depends on the material behaviour and the machine design; the flight alone does not determine capacity.
When to choose this option
Use this page when the pitch must change along the screw. For one repeated pitch, start with cold-rolled continuous screw flight or sectional spiral blade. For a complete screw on a centre member, review the shafted auger assembly.

How should a variable pitch be shown on the drawing?
List each pitch value, the number of turns at that value and the axial position of every transition. A dimensioned side view is preferred to a general note such as progressive pitch.
Can both diameter and pitch change on the same flight?
The combination can be reviewed, but it needs a complete station-by-station geometry schedule. The manufacturing route and joining plan are confirmed after the drawing is checked.
Is variable-pitch flighting always supplied as one continuous length?
No. It may be planned as continuous flighting, individual segments or an assembled screw, depending on diameter, thickness, material and total length.
What information is needed to check clearance?
Provide the trough or tube inside diameter, shaft or centre member, required running clearance and the installed position of bearings or supports.
